Cloves are the dried, unopened flower buds of the evergreen clove tree and receive their name for the Latin "clavus," meaning "nail." Originating in the Spice Islands, they have a history filled with romance, greed and murder. Cloves have long been valued in Chinese cooking, although today they are used in a variety of dishes.
